"Oh, but I must hurry!"  thought young Catherine of Siena very early one morning as she picked up a loaf of bread and a jug of water from the kitchen.  "No one must suspect anything."
Catherine had made up her mind to run away.  She wanted to become a hermit in a cave so she could pray and think about God all day long.
Catherine slipped out the door and into the courtyard, then out into the cobbled street, then out beyond the city gates.
Farther and farther she walked.  Several hours went by.  The countryside was growing wilder adn stranger.  "I am miles and miles away from home now,"  saind Catherine to herself.
Suddenly, there it was!  A beautiful cave!  It looked like the perfect place.  Catherine was overjoyed.
But was Catherine really old enough to be a hermit?  And wouldn't her father come looking for her to take her home?  Most of all, was it really God's will for her to be a hermit?
This book gives the answers.  It also tells how Catherine cut off her hair, how she cared for the rude old woman, how she saved her dear father from Purgatory, and how she advised the Holy Father himself.

"Sister, it couldn't have happened!" declared the priest.  It was all a dream, like the other time."
But Sister Catherine shood her head with childlike confidence, "Oh no, Father!  I see the Blessed Virgin as plainly as I see you.  And she wants the medal made right away, so people can wear it and start receiving graces."
Father Aladel just could not believe that Our Lady was appearing to Sister Catherine Laboure - and asking for a medal to be made too!  Why, Sister Catherine was only a novice!
"Forget the whole thing," he told her.  "Just say your prayers and try to be like the other Sisters."
Catherine obediently tried to forget - but then the Blessed Mother came again!  And again she asked for the Medal to be made.
Would Our Lady's request ever be granted?  Would Fr. Aladel ever believe she had relly come?  And what were the "great graces" she had promised to those who wore the Medal with confidence?
This book shows what happened, also telling about Catherine's second mother, about obstinate old John - who refused to have anything to do with the Medal - and about how Sister Catherine kept her beg secret.
In short, here is the wonderful story of what happened when the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to young St. Catherine Laboure.

St. Catherine & Miraculous Medal
by Alma Power-Waters

$9.95 - 138  pages
 Soft Cover

Ignatius Press

For more than a hundred and fifty years the Miraculous Medal had been know and worn by Catholics throughout the world.  It has been used  and promoted by great saints and Popes as  a most powerful sacramental.  Less well known is the story of the French Sister to whom the Blessed Virgin manifested the Medal in 1830.

This Vision book tells the story of Catherine Laboure, a Burgundy farm girl who, after a prophetic dream of St. Vincent de Paul, became a Sister of Charity in Paris and later in Enghien, where she cooked and mended and cared for the inmates of a home for elderly men.  To this obscure Sister the Blessed Virgin appeared, made prophecies, and commissioned the making of the Medal which soon came to be known as "miraculous" because of the favors wrought.  St. Catherine Laboure lived a life of prayer and service to the poor.  She was canonized in 1947.

St. Catherine of the Miraculous Medal

This is the story of the saint through whom we received the Miraculous Medal.  No sacramental since the Rosary has had such an impact on the Church, and none has ever been diffused in such incredible numbers, with many millions of people all over the world wearing the Medal within a few years.  Since 1933, when it was exhumed and found miraculously preserved, the body of St. Catherine Laboure (1806 - 1876) has lain incorrupt at 140, rue de Bac, Paris, in the Motherhouse of the Sisters of Charity of St.  Vincent de Paul, venerated by thousands of pilgrims each year.
Who was this St. Catherine Laboure, who during her lifetime chose to remain entirely unknown, except to her confessor, as the visionary of the Miraculos Medal?  To answer this question, the author spent 10 years in research, studying many documents never before available to her biographers and carrying out his investigation in Paris, Rome and Catherine's own village.  What he has produced here is a definitive life of the Saint which is at once highly readable and inspiring.
Emerging from his work is the fact that Catherine Laboure was no accidental saint - that, to launch the Miraculous Medal devotion, Heaven chose its seer well.  The reader will come to love St. Catherine Laboure, will see in her a woman of incredible strength and character, of unbelievable constancy, of kindness, humility, obedience and self-effacement.

The Life of
St. Claude De La Colombiere

The warmth and security of his parents; the exciting games with his brothers; the desire to learn and to excel in his studies - all of this was normal to young Claude.  But within his heart, beneath the surface of everyday life, a quiet voice seemed to be beckoning him.  What was it, or better, Who was it?
The teenage Claude grew to admire his Jesuit teachers, and while his friend slept during a Sunday homily, Claude listened intently about the heroic witness of the North American martyrs.  How different was life in "New France" among the Indians; how very comfortable and predictable was his own life.  Seventeenth century France reveled in the glory of the  "sun king," Louis XIV, and the frills of the minuet.  But there was more to life than that.  An ocean away Claude's fellow Frenchmen were dying for Christ.  Perhaps it was time to seriously consider what the Lord had in mind for him.
His Prayer and discernment led him to enter the Jesuit novitiate.  His goal and challenge were to respond to God's call and will on a daily basis.  One thing he soon found out: his life was no longer "predictable."
After ordination, he was appointed to the Jesuit College of Monial and made spiritual director to the nuns in the Convent of the Visitation.  Here he met St. Margaret Mary Alacoque.  Claude was to be God's instrument for helping her make known the devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus.
From Paray he was sent on a mission to London during a time of Church persecution.  Forced to return to France, he longed to have done more for the Catholics he lift behind.  Yet even in those hard times he believed the Lord was guiding the events of his life.  St. Claude died peacefully on Fubruary 15, 1682.  The memory of heroic faithfulness to the Lord's will remains his gift to God's people.

King David And his Songs

"They've sent a mere boy to fight against me!" roared the giant Goliath, as he caught sight of young David across the valley.  "A boy with nothing but a shepherd's staff in his hand!  Am I just a dog?"
David looked at the nine foot giant.  "You come to me with a sword and with a spear," he called out fearlessly, "but I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, which you have defied!"
The giant bared this teeth.  "You say this - to me?"
"Yes," called out David.  "And much more.  This day the Lord will deliver you into my hand, and I will cut off your head.  And I well give the bodies of your men to the birds of the air, and to the beasts of the earth: that all the world may know that there is a God in Israel."
This was too much for Goliath.  With giant strides he came across the valley, while the armies of Israel and of the Philistines watched with bated breath.
What was David going to do?  Had he made a foolish mistake?  Was God going to come to his aid?
This book describes what happened next.  It also tells how David had to flee for his life, how he became a leader of armies, how he became king - as well as how God inspired him to write many holy songs, or Psalms.  In short, this is the great story of the little shepherd boy, King David, whom God raised up to be one of the greatest kings in history - and an ancestor of His own Divine Son.

Life of Saint Dominic

While her son was yet unborn, the mother of St. Dominic had a vision of a dog "bearing in his mouth a lighted torch which set fire to the world."  And as the water of Baptism was poured over his head, the woman who held him saw a brilliant star shining on his forehead.  In later life, according to Blessed Cecilia, who wrote of him, he retained this same light: "From his forehead, and between his brows, there shone forth a kind of radiant light, which filled men with respect and love."  During a vision of Sts. Peter and Paul, St. Dominic received the commission, "Go and preach, for to this ministry thou art called,"which was a prophecy regarding the order St. Dominic would found - the Order of Preachers, or the Dominicans, an order which was to attract 5000 priests and 2000 other clerics and lay brothers within just 35 years after the Founder's death. ...Drawn by a supernatural attraction, people flocked after him, eager to hear his words, and they even embraced with joy the penance he preached.
The miracles and influence of St. Dominic were felt by all who knew him.  He once saved 40 English pilgrims whose boat had overturned in the Garonne River and who had sunk beneath the waters and were presumed gone.  He raised to life a young man named Napoleon who had been killed and horribly mangled in a fall from a horse.  In his battle with the Albigensian heretics, his writings were twice submitted to the test of fire, and both times emerged unscathed.  And it was in great part under St. Dominic's inspiration and through the Rosary, which he had preached, that Count Simon De Montfort won the Battle of Muret with only 800 cavalry, routing an Albigensian army of 100,000; the Christians suffered a loss of just eight, while 20,000 of the enemy perished.  It was also through the Rosary and through preaching true Catholic dotrine that St. Dominic won his great spiritual victories over the Albigensians; it is said that 100,000 unbelievers were converted to the True Faith by his preaching and his miracles.  When Queen Blanche of France sought St. Dominic's assistance in her barrenness, he recommended to her and her people the Rosary, and the child born as a result, the "child of the Rosary," was St. Louis, King of France.

"A boy just fell off his horse and broke his neck!" blurted out the messenger as he rushed into the room.  Dominic and the others listened to the dreadful news.
The boy was Napoleon Orsini - and he was dead.  "Napoleon...my poor Napoleon..." moaned the boy's uncle.
"Perhaps all is not lost," murmured Dominic, as if to himself.
Dominic calmly proceeded to offer the Holy Sacricice of the Mass, and with great fervor.  At the Elevation, the people were astounded to see Dominic raised several inches from the ground!  And his face shone as the sun!
After Mass, Dominic entered the room where Napoleon's body lay.  He arranged the stiffening limbs and began to pray ardently.  He wept, he prostrated himself on the floor, he begged God for mercy.  Then he walked over to stand by the boy's head.
What was Dominic going to do now?
This book gives the answer.  It also tells about Dominic's victories over the devil and over the Albigensian heresy, and it describes his miracles and the remarkable vision his mother had seen before Dominic was born.  All in all, this is the wonderful story of Saint Dominic, founder of the Order of Preachers (Dominicans) and one of the greatest saints in the history of the Church.

"The city's going to be destroyed by earthquake!" one excited person exclaimed.
"No, fire and brimstone are going to fall from Heaven!" said others.
"It's the end of the whole world, not just the city of Lima!" declared still others.
What on earth had the saintly Father Francis Solano said last night in that sermon he gave in the marketplace?  Why, it was now midnight, and the whole city was in an uproar!
There was a long line in front of every confessional.  Candlelight processions with the Blessed Sacrament wound through the streets.  Stolen goods were being returned to their owners.  Enemies were reconciled.  Unbaptized children were baptized, marriages were rectified, debts were paid.
The Viceroy and the Archbishop held a hasty meeting.  Then the Viceroy issued an order to his officers: "Go to the monastery and bring Father Francis here at once!  We have to get to the bottom of this!"
What was going to happen now?
This book gives the answer.  It also tells about the terrible plague, the slaves on the sinking ship, the Indians on the warpath, and Francis' worldly friend, John.
